Cord boss Raila Odinga is a politician known to treat his press conferences with much seriousness. But on Tuesday afternoon he left reporters at the Serena Hotel in shock when, in the middle of a press conference, he stopped after one of his aides handed him a mobile phone. He quickly walked to a corner of the room and talked for between four to five minutes. He then returned to finish off from where he left.
The press teams drawn from all leading media houses were left wondering who exactly was the caller who can make Raila stop reading a statement. It has since been revealed that Prime Minister Raila was on a surprise call with USA President Barack Obama.
Word in the corridors of power is that the Obama administration is not happy with the run away corruption that is currently supervised by alleged top statehouse operatives. President Obama lashed out at the opposition when he visited Nairobi last year, its now said that he was under pressure from the American corporate elites who wanted a share of the rising opportunities in trading with Kenya.
There is panic among statehouse operatives that some of EUROBOND transactions effected via American and British banks may be leaked to the opposition in order to tame corruption. It has been alleged that some payments for land purchased by the Kenyatta family in Naivasha and that of DP Ruto in Eldoret South were made from offshore accounts.
