I am told someone is pocketing 4M a month as consultation kickback from Siaya county government. This is three times what president Kenyatta earns per month and five times the salary of a sitting MP. It is enough to build a complete dispensary, enough to sponsor ten university students for four years.
Enough to do so many many many uncountable things.
Now, this is the money an individual pockets per month. Remember, Siaya, just like other parts of Nyanza, has some of the worst roads. Poverty level is high, mortality rate high, life expectancy low, et cetera et cetera.
I have said, in plethora posts, that as we camp, demolishing and rebuking the government of president Uhuru Kenyatta, we have given some pests – back home – ample time to run our counties dry. Money is siphoned by ticks who use their proximity to Raila as a sword.
I hope you are still alive to the fact that the latest World Bank report on performance of counties placed Luo Nyanza counties in awkward positions. For the counties that were expected to be the trendsetters in devolution achievements, considering that they fought for it tooth and nail, the outcome has rather been disappointing, disapproving, low, disheartening and demoralising.
Every other research has cemented the reality of Luo Nyanza counties’ poor performance. Maybe we now understand the reason why. The devil is still in the details though!
Interestingly, Okoa Kenya aims at increasing county allocation to 45%. Guys like him will support it through all means so that the earnings can bulge to 10M or more. It is such corrupt elements, money minting gangs and allies of impunity who have persistently deflated the tubes of development in Siaya county and Luo Nyanza in general.
But I digress.
This is Siaya county. I am not aware whether the same money eating culture also thrives in your county. You know, We thought – falsely of course – that devolution would be the much anticipated saviour after decades of marginalisation, underdevelopment and neglect in Luo Nyanza and of course other regions. The reverse is painfully admissible.
Devolution has turned to haunt us. I cry my motherland. I CRY the Luo Nation.
