The sugar saga has taken a new twist after Deputy President William Rutoaccused Cord leader Raila Odinga of being a witchdoctor.
Ruto, who was in Western Kenya, accused sugar barons who sponsored Cord in the last general elections of using the opposition to sully the sugar deal between Kenya and Uganda.
The infuriated DP said that he was the one alongside the President who run the government and wondered aloud why leaders from Western had to seek the services of a ‘mganga’ referring to Raila.
The DP said:
“The deal was meant to protect local farmers against cartels that have been illegally importing cheap sugar from other countries through Uganda…..”
Western Kenya leaders who accompanied Ruto echoed the same sentiments.
Raila has criticized the deal entered between Kenya and Uganda that will allow importation of cheap sugar from the neighboring country. The former Prime Minister said during his tour of Voi that sugar in supermarkets is smuggled from the port city of Kismayu.
He faulted the government for entering into deals when stores were ‘overflowing’ with sugar.
