The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has today blown up a ship carrying heroin worth KSh 20 Million in the Indian Ocean.
Sources within the forces have disclosed to Tuko.co.ke that the undercover operation of seizing the heroin ship was done by the Kenya police and the KDF was only providing the logistics of blowing up the ship in the ocean.
KDF spokesperson col David Obonyo confirmed the report.
Interior minister Joseph Nkaissery, chief of the defence forces Samson Mwathethe, newly-appointed Navy commander Brigadier Levi Franklin Mghalu and Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet led the operation.
Exactly a year ago, another ship was blown up carrying drugs valued at KSh 1 billion and the operation was headed by President Uhuru Kenyatta from a helicopter that was overflying the ocean.
The ship and the drugs were destroyed as a message to drug lords that the president warned were keen “on ruining our children. We do not care who owns the ship or the drugs.”
“We will not allow drug barons to destroy the future of our young people. We will track and deal with them decisively,” President Uhuru said then.
