The fire razed down Gikomba market stalls in Nairobi on Tuesday, June 23, 2015, the government promised to set u new structures now the traders insist they want to set up new stalls.
Dr. Evans Kidero, governor, Nairobi county revealed that they have set aside KSh 5 million to compensate the affected families.
However, the traders have disclosed that they will no longer wait for the government to set up premises to carry on with their activities.
“We have met the government representatives today and we do not agree with their plans, they want to bar us from rebuilding our stalls. That is telling us to go hungry and become thieves,” Mwadede, a trader is quoted by the Daily Nation.
According to reports, some sellers have already started constructing premises. They claim that only shoe traders who operate next to government houses were restricted.
“We know it only affects the area between where a road is supposed to pass through and the residential houses which the government said it will rebuild,” a trader said.
