Welcome to the famous Mwiki, a place where you cannot wish to revisit due to pathetic road conditions. Going to Mwiki is as equal as getting a tough punishment. The state of the roads deteriorate day-in-day-out, and the people there boast that they live in Nairobi. Nonetheless, no amount of demonstrations by residents has caught the government’s attention.
When we visited Mwiki Estate, a distance of roughly 17km from the CBD, we took around 13 minutes from town to Hunters, a distance of around 14km from the CBD. Surprisingly, the remaining 2km to Mwiki took us 1 and a 1/2 hours.
Located 5kms off Thika Road, Mwiki Ward is one of the four wards in Kasarani constituency where hon John Njoroge Chege is Member of Parliament and Isaack Njoroge Ngige MCA. It has a population of approximately 33, 000 people. Apart from having bad roads, Mwiki prides itself as the mother of the prestigious KASS MATT supermarkets.
Despite efforts by the MP and the MCA to push the County government into making the roads, Kidero has not taken any action. He has instead promised to re-carpet the road. But the question that still begs is how Kidero plans to re-carpet a road that does not exist. The tar/bitumen that was applied faded long time ago, leaving the road in a shamba condition.
