A woman is being held by police in Kwale for setting her son on fire after he allegedly stole KSh 50. She told police that it was the best punishment she could give him.
The mother is said to have tied her son’s hands together, attached mattress pieces to his hands and doused him in paraffin before striking the match box.
The 9-year-old was rescued by neighbours who responded in time to save him from potentially worse injuries and rushed him to Kwale hospital where he was treated.
Police in Kwale were alerted of the incident and arrested the mother and she said that she was rectifying her son’s unbecoming behaviour.
“That was the only punishment which can make my child change,” She is quoted by the Star Newspaper.
It is reported that the boy said he took the money to buy food at a nearby market because he was hungry.
