The People’s Governor
Ladies and gentlemen, I am running to be the Governor for Kisumu County to reclaim our beloved County from mismanagement, corruption, squandering of scarce public resources, unemployment, insecurity, poor health care delivery, poor infrastructure, lack of sports facilities, poor sanitation, dilapidated education facilities, lack of clean water and widespread poverty.
My manifesto is already out, thanks to “Think Tanks” from Maseno University that helped me to put the final touches. My campaign structure is also taking shape and it is all systems ready to go. But in the meantime, it is necessary to look into the “rear mirror” to gauge myself on what I have been able to do for my county with my personal resources and networks developed over the past years. Below list is not exhaustive but at least gives a glimpse of what I have done over the last 10 years. If the incumbent Governor could lend me the resources under his watch and the powers that he wields, I am sure I would have done more and touched more lives:
1. Employment for the youths through my own initiatives and networks
Over 200 people(both male and female) have had gainful employment within the last 10 years, thanks to my own initiatives and networks. Unfortunately one passed on in 2010. These people have families and other dependents and are evenly spread out in the entire Kisumu County. Breakdown is as follows:
- 40 employed by local NGOs;
- 27 employed by various UN agencies and are currently working outside the country;
- 60 employed by bilateral organizations in Kenya;
- 30 employed by the private sector (including banks, insurance firms, consulting agencies, etc);
- 61 employed by national corporate organizations;
- 21 employed by me directly to manage my farms and real estate;
NB: List of the employed are available and names for respective employers are also available.
2. Women groups
Kobungu women Group in Nyakach Sub County is my flagship project. Together we are moving mountains and the women who are mainly widows are getting empowered each month. I am so proud to be the patron for this women group.
3. Young entrepreneurs
We have plenty of entrepreneurs with no capital. At Katito in Nyakach sub-county, I recognized one upcoming entrepreneur and boosted his business with substantial capital. Today he is doing well in his “biashara” and he is able to support more of his dependents.
4. Clean water
Today, those in Komoro village in Koguta East , Nyakach Sub-County enjoy clean drinking water in my name. The piped water from Sondu reservoir is provided free of charge.
In the last cropping season, I provided 11 families in Nyakach sub-county with fertilizers to enable them produce more crops. The results encouraged me.
Believe it or not, girls at Naki School used to share toilets with boys. This is no longer the case as I have partnered with like-minded and development conscious citizens to construct female toilets at Naki School. The project has been so successful and together with Mr. Chris Obange and others, we are expanding this project to accommodate more girls;
A classroom stands at Guu School in my name. The board chairman, Mr. Benjamin Owino Olweny recently wrote a thank you letter which touched my heart;
Another classroom stands at Ongielore Primary School in East Nyakach in my name. This came with desks for pupils. In his appreciation that also touched my heart, the Head Teacher, Mr. Jusper Odhiambo reiterated that the classroom and desks will go a long way in supporting the school to meet its objectives of producing the best students;
In collaboration with other leaders, classrooms are in place at Abwao School in Nyakach Sub County.
And at Chemelil (Muhoroni sub county), the Anglican faithfuls at Ngeny (which is opposite Chemelil Catholic Church) were boosted when I contributed building materials and cash for the construction of their new Church. The Church leader, Pastor Evans Apiyo mentioned to me that my support touched his heart personally;
Nyamaroka A.I.C received a boost from me when I repaired the floor and pulpit so that the church faithfuls can worship in comfort. The Chairman of the Church, Mr. Ooro Odero and Church Teacher, Mr. Jectone Okute confirmed to me that this was one of the greatest support they ever received;
In Kisumu Central Sub Country, I provided roofing materials for Mbeme Church (Anglican) located at Kolwa;
At Nyalenda,I helped to buy building materials for the construction of Nyalenda Catholic Church.
8. Spiritual nourishment
In partnership with Ramogi FM Studio and Radio Presenter Mr. Ben Oluoch Okelo (BOO), I donated 3 months’ worth of Holy Books through Ramogi FM studio. Please tune in everyday between 5am- 10am and interact with the presenter BOO and get your bible for spiritual nourishment. The Holy Books have rubber stamps with my name.
9. The less fortunate
Being an orphan myself who benefited from the goodwill of others, 4 orphans are being sponsored by me directly. One resides near car wash area in Kisumu while the other three are in Pand Pieri/Nyalenda where I grew up as a young boy. The three are from the same family and in 2010, I led a massive funds drive for them when they lost their bread winner. To date, one of the three (a girl) completed form 4 and is about to join university. The others are still in secondary and primary schools respectively. The funds are safely kept for them at KCB and are managed by the brother to the diseased and one of my closest UN colleague and friend, Mr. Gabriel Omondi Ndege, under my patronage.
10. The sick or elderly
In partnership with MediMax Company, I have donated 4 wheelchairs with modern gadgets. One such wheelchair went to Seme, One in Nyalenda and 2 in Nyakach sub- County;
I have covered hospital bills for more than 10 patients in Nyakach, Kisumu Central, Seme, Kisumu West, Muhoroni and Nyando. One of the patients was transferred from Russia to Avenue Hospital with full funding from me;
I have partly sponsored a volleyball team of mixed gender to represent Muhoroni Sub County in the MIGUENA volleyball tournament in Bondo. I was so encouraged by the results and I promised to work with the team and other similar teams to promote sports in our County.
We have great talents in Music in our County. One such talented young man is a musician called Alfred Nduma alias “Onyango Underage”. He approached me for support by sponsoring music production and I am glad to announce that today his music is heard through Ramogi FM, Mayienga and Lolwe and his CDs are being bought like hot cakes in Nairobi and in Kisumu Counties;
I also recognized the talents and entrepreneurship of our leading Benga Musician “Madanje Perimeter” and I injected capital (by sponsoring music production) into his studio to purchase more equipment for his studio, which he is now relocating from Nairobi to Kisumu.
13. The bereaved
We have a rich culture of providing a good send off for our departed citizens. I recognize and identify with this culture and that is why I have provided several decent coffins for our fallen citizens in Muhoroni, Nyando, Kisumu Central, Seme, Nyakach and Kisumu West.
Additionally, as we have to feast during funerals, I have personally donated bulls in Nyakach, Kisumu Central and Muhoroni, Goats in Seme and Nyando during funerals.
I will not stop there, we have several more projects planned or ongoing in various parts of the County. This list will be updated as needed.
