By Comrade Albert Nyakundi Amenya – Banana Peddler, The County of Kisii
Gusii community is one of the most underrepresented communities in all spheres of leadership in Kenya. Politically, Gusii leaders are the lazy. When elected to parliament, all they do is to shout ‘nay’ and ‘aye’ to other people’s motions, thrice a week and earn jumbo salaries. Conversely, these people add little or no lustre to Kenyan politics. They are always divided to an extent that they lack an ideal hierarchy that can crown a political ‘summum bonum’. What they fail to appreciate is that a united minority will always defeat a divided majority.
The leadership of the community is in a state of ill-health thoroughly saddled between leadership crisis & political paralysis. More than ever before, this is now the time to redefine, reshape, and relaunch our politics. As a community we must backslide from politics of Clanism, catchy slogans, empty promises and Godfatherism to that of sacrifices, values and service delivery—genuine services.
Not long ago, lawmakers from the larger Gusii Community were among the fiercest in terms of contributions during the parliamentary proceedings, good old glory days of Abuya Abuya, Enock Magara, George Moseti Anyona, and Zachary Onyonka among illustrative few. Not anymore. The community today suffers political poverty. The last time I remember a proactive Kisii MP in parliament was Omingo Magara.
Tattles have it that due to political dormancy, the keen observers from Kisii cannot easily identify most of their Lawmakers by names and the constituencies they purport to represent. Thusly, out of the 12 MPs, it is only 1 out of every 200 Kisiis that can correctly name 5 Members of Parliament from Kisii at random.
The only outspoken and hard working Kisii MP that is well known to the Gusii people is Hon Simba Arati. But to further fester the wound, most Kisiis are not even aware that Hon Arati is a Nairobi legislature.
Another Member of Parliament that is known for wrong reasons is this Jimmy Hon. Jimmy Nuru Angwenyi of Kitutu Chache North constituency. This one behaves like a bull in a china shop. He senselessly basks in the pot belly revolution where MPs seem to think with their stomachs than reason with the interest of the community at heart. This group treasures stomach infrastructure than mental infrastructure.
The purported leaders from Gusii Land do not believe that their time is up. In spite of warnings from the people, they carry on with their indifference.
When 2017 comes, the people will unprecedentedly sweep them and employ serious servant leadership. Someone should remind these sluggards that the sophisticated people of Gusii Land are not fools after all.
This leadership frauds are the most disconnected lot on earth, think about it; the roads are pathetic, ironically they buy big fuel guzzlers as a panacea—where does this leave the average farmer, pupil, teacher or Nyaboke and the market women who ship their products vide these roads on a daily basis. All these salient unpardonable sins should put the conscience of Gusii community on trial; do we choose continuity or change?
When 2017 comes, my prayer to the lord is that the great people of Kisii and Nyamira Counties shall send home all these pirates purporting to be leaders and replace them with youthful leaders with promising pedigree of integrity, courage and vision.
The Gusii leadership must be reinvigorated so as to be alive to aspiration and yearning of the people. The era of no work but jumbo salary among the Gusii leaders must be brought to a halt. The rules of competence and appropriateness in the larger Gusii leadership must be observed in such a way that those leaders who earn jumbo salaries for free will be taken care of administratively. The Omogusii broom revolution must evolve an agile and competent representation that will help the Gusii people midwife their lofty dreams to fruition.
Former NAZI leader once gave an opinion that “Sooner will a camel pass through the needle’s eye than a great leader be ‘discovered’ by an election” But the Omogusii should prove wrong that theory in 2017. The Omogusii should not only send all political opportunists home, but also record many firsts in the nascent history of the two counties. This will be a commonsense revolution where political social climbers will be swept off by the wind of change. What a Tsunami of high magnitude …..I bet.
