Nandi Hills Member of Parliament hon. Alfred Keter has adopted a twenty year old girl to save her from forced marriage by her parents.
Jackline Chepkorir ran away from her parents house in Chepkunyuk to avoid being forced into marriage. Now Keter has said he will take her in as well as pay for her university fees. Chepkorir’s parents had been attempting to marry her off as they didn’t have funds for her education
“It is sad and regrettable that a young and bright girl like Chepkorir would have her dreams cut short. I hereby assume a guardianship role and commit to pay for her four year university education.” said Keter.
Chepkorir has been forced to stay at her grandmother’s house in order to avoid the marriage.
A study by Plan UK indicates that young women and girls who are subjected to a forced marriage are much less likely to complete their studies. Many who are forced into a marriage will drop out of school before the wedding.
